Bill Sclight grew up loving architecture. The son of the principal architectural designer for the American Water Works Company, once the largest owner of private water utility companies in the country, Bill could not help but absorb an appreciation of beauty in the build environment and an understanding of the principles of good design. It would have seemed natural that Bill would follow his father into the profession, but the path detoured when Bill went to college at Rutgers University and discovered journalism as a major. The 60s, 70s and early 80s were exciting times for journalism, but the experience of converting a raw, previous manufacturing loft in New York's SOHO district to a residence for himself and his wife, rekindled that old passion for architecture. In 1983, Bill left The New York Times and returned to student life, earning a Masters of Science degree at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, including bachelors work at the School of Architecture. Bill moved to The Hamptons in 1985 and worked in the offices of two prominent local architects before going into business for himself in 1996, working from the home studio he built in Water Mill, designing luxury residences for The Hamptons summer colonies. Bill Sclight is a member of AIA Peconic, the 130-member East End chapter of the American Institute of Architects. He is the chapter's Vice President and President-Elect for 2009
